My trip to Iceland
I recently went to Iceland and I had the time of my life. It truly is the most beautiful country in the world. Breath taking views nature has to offer. In this post I'll share some tips and the places that I visited during my trip.
THINGS TO DO:
1. Bar hoping in Reykjavic.
Laugavegur is the bar street of Reykjavic. We where there in summer and the place are full of tourists. It's fun to grab a couple of pints and hangout with fellow travelers. Watch out for the time though, sun does not come down and it's bright even at 3am.
2. Thermal Pools and Spa
There are loads of thermal pools in Iceland and the best of them is Blue Lagoon. Very relaxing, a place to just chill, drink beer and talk with your buddies. They also have a sauna, steam room, restaurants and other facilities. Don't forget to visit other local thermal pools on other towns though they are fun as well.
3. Hiking
Some of my most memorable experiences in Iceland are the hikes. If time was not a concern I will just hike around Iceland. It might be tiring but you'll always be rewarded with the best views. My favorite hike was in Glymur a sky scraper tall waterfalls, it took around 3 hours to hike to the mountain and back but you'll be rewarded with the one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland
4. Camping
We decided to just bring our tents and camp around Iceland during our trip around the ring road and It's one of the best decision we've made. One morning you'll be waking up with a view of a beautiful mountain the next morning you'll be waking up with a view of an amazing falls. So don't be afraid to camp around Iceland, it's safe and you'll experience camping which is unique to Iceland. The paid camp sites all have hot showers and a kitchen to cook your food. If you're a bit budget conscious, this might be a good option for you since hotels in Iceland are very expensive.
5. Go around Iceland's ring road.
This is a road trip that will take you around the country and see the most beautiful sceneries in your life. You'll see breath taking falls, hike mountains, camp beside a lagoon, climb a volcano and enjoy the cost. There's no better way to experience Iceland than this. It took us around 8 days to go around the ring road but there are so many things to see, we needed to rush through some of them. I recommend spending around 12-14 days going around the ring road. This will give more time to enjoy the views and simmer the moment.
TIPS:
1. Rent a 4WD
It's hard to go around the ring road without car so it's well worth it to rent one plus you'll get to see the sights in hard to reach places.
2. Travel with a group
It's much more fun going around Iceland with a group and it will also make the trip safer. You can also switch drivers in between so everyone can get enough rest.
3. Bring a tent, sleeping bag and a camping mat
Hotels are quite expensive in Iceland so It's a good idea to just camp after a good day of exploring. Make sure your tent is water proof, sleeping bag can handle less than 5°C and a camping mat will elevate you from the ground a bit so you can stay dry. Camp sites in Iceland can cost around 1300 kronus per person.
4. Cook your own food
In time always eating in a restaurant can get quite expensive so it's a good idea to cook you own food. You can do your groceries in Bonus the local grocery which is available in every town. It's also handy to bring a portable stove and eating utensils with you. We saved a lot of money by just cooking our own food.
5. Wear a triclimate jacket and a water proof boots.
It's raining everyday in Iceland but its also cold so it's better to bring a jacket that can handle the rain and cold.
6. Stay up until you get tired
The sun never sets when we where there in June 2018. So take advantage of the midnight sun and keep exploring Iceland until you get tired.
7. Don't follow your itinerary like it's written in stone
There are loads of things to see in Iceland and some of the good ones shows up in random places. Make sure to stop, let the moment sink in and enjoy the views.
